Merimbula is the ‘Heart of the Sapphire Coast’ and the main tourist centre on the far south coast of NSW. It is popular holiday destination for its lakes, beaches, forests and mountains.
Merimbula comes from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘two waters’, or divided lake. The town has beautiful waterways and is built around the shores of Top Lake and Merimbula Lake with Back Lake on the northern edge of town. The lakes are tidal, so are very clean and ideal for swimming, fishing, boating and a host of other water activities.
Merimbula has many beautiful ocean beaches - two of the most popular are Main Surf Beach and Short Point.
There are plenty of things to do in Merimbula – both natural and man-made. From whale watching (Sep-Nov) to mini-golf to native animal reserves to swimming, sailing and fishing – there is something for all the family.
Fresh seafood abounds – whether you catch it yourself or enjoy a meal at one of the many fine restaurants and cafes.
As the main tourist hub on the NSW far south coast, there is plenty of accommodation in Merimbula - everything from holiday houses, apartments, hotels, motels, B&Bs, cabins, caravan sites and camping. The summer school holidays are the busiest season on the coast and it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance.
